Act before it's too late. How you or your kids can prevent depression?

Updated: May 18, 2023

Human mind is not designed for long isolation like the ongoing lock-down. By definition, human is a ‘social animal’. This kind of isolation may seriously affect anyone’s mental and physical well being, specially children and teenagers. During lock-down/ pandemic, you and your kids need to ensure that you are maintaining a healthy & stress free lifestyle. Following are the most common symptoms people show when they have clinical depression or anxiety that may lead to depression. You should immediately seek professional help if you observe these symptoms. A person ‘not having clinical depression’ may also show some or most of these symptoms, so personal discretion and professional help must be taken into consideration: 1. They want to be alone most of the time 2. They do certain things repeatedly like going to the washroom more frequently 3. They might not “look depressed” 4. They develop a habit of 'excessive Worrying' & 'over-thinking' 5. They may often seem exhausted or complain about always being tired 6. They can be unusually irritable 7. They can be unusually restless 8. They might have trouble in falling or staying asleep 9. They may have a tendency of avoiding social situations 10. They might develop unusual fears 11. They could have a tough time responding to affection and concern 12. They might frequently turn down activities they used to love or would otherwise enjoy 13. They can develop abnormal eating habits 14. They may start needing more from you 15. They can have bad days, and “better” days 16. They may have feelings of guilt, worthlessness and helplessness 17. They may feel Pessimism and hopelessness 18. They may have aches, pains, headaches, or cramps that won't go away 19. They may have digestive problems that don't get better, even with treatment 20. They may have persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings

Anyone at any age can suffer from depression. Once you are 'clinically' depressed, it's very difficult to come back to 'normal'. Medical research in 'mental health' hasn't been as advanced as in 'physical health'. There are hardly any medicines available which can 'quickly' fix your depression. People who have suffered from depression will tell you that only one moment changed their entire life. Anyone who is healthy and fit shouldn't wait for that moment. And remember that 'prevention is better than cure'. Maintain a lifestyle for yourself and your kids which keeps you all 'emotionally fit'.

  1. Healthy diet

  2. Correct sleep pattern

  3. Physical exercise

  4. Meditation (Strictly under guidance of a seasoned expert)

  5. Stress management (Join life coaching lessons under an expert)

  6. Develop a hobby which involves activity and which is creative / productive. For example instead of 'reading a book' you can learn how to 'write poetry or stories'. Instead of 'listening music' you can learn how to 'play an instrument or sing'.

  7. Outing & social interaction

According to researches, large number of students who enroll for music classes, Gym, Yoga classes or painting classes are 'prescribed' to do so by their psychologists. Why not start acting before it's too late? Why not start working on a 'healthy' life style which is the most natural and normal thing to do?

Wishing you a happy and healthy life ahead!
